The Snowmass Balloon Festival is an annual event held in Snowmass Village each September. During the Festival, which takes place over a three-day weekend, dozens of colorful hot air balloons take to the skies morning and night, delighting the spectators watching from the ground. From an exciting hot air balloon race to an evening event showcasing the beautiful, warm glow of these hot air balloons, the Snowmass Balloon Festival is a fun, free, and family-friendly event.
During the Snowmass Balloon Festival, the hot air balloon pilots participate in a race from Snowmass Village to Glenwood Springs, or the longest distance the balloons can travel down the Roaring Fork Valley in a three hour period. The race can be viewed from any promontory from Snowmass Village to Glenwood Springs. In Basalt, hike up the Arbaney-Kittle Trail, and in Carbondale, hike up Red Hill's Mushroom Rock Trail, for a good view of the balloons floating through the skies on their way downvalley. However, for arguably the best view with the least effort, head to Snowmass before the race begins to watch the hot air balloons make their skyward ascent en masse.
One of the most popular events during the Balloon Festival is the Saturday night balloon glow, which is held during the evening to take advantage of the warm, candle-like glow cast by the hot air balloons. Dubbed the “Glow Show,” attendees can listen to live music, enjoy a barbecue meal and beverages and watch the light show, as the skilled balloonists carefully coordinate the lighting of their burners, which makes for a stunning sight as dusk settles in the valley.
