We want everyone traveling to Aspen for the next three months to know that travel to Aspen after August 14 will be impacted by the closure and replacement of the Grand Avenue Bridge in Glenwood Springs. The bridge is a key artery linking I-70 east and west to Highway 82. The preparatory work for replacing the bridge has been ongoing for the last few years, and the final stage of replacing the bridge will occur over a 95-day period beginning today, August 14.
The replacement project will require detours around parts of Glenwood Springs, and has the potential for significant delays for drivers who are making their way from I-70 to the Roaring Fork Valley’s towns and cities.
Consequently, we are recommending our guests who plan to drive up to Aspen from the east, to avoid exiting I-70 at Glenwood Springs. Instead, drivers from the Denver area can take the alternate route into Aspen over Independence Pass. The Pass is usually open until Halloween, but if weather conditions allow, the Colorado Department of Transportation will try to keep it open as long as possible. We are happy to provide directions for this route.
If you are coming to Aspen from the west on I-70, you can take the West Glenwood exit and follow the posted detours around Glenwood Springs.
