Visiting Aspen in October means beautiful but cooler weather and golden fall foliage lingering in town. Outdoor activities are still plentiful, and our town is less crowded than in the peak winter and summer months.
With its mild daytime temperatures, October can be a wonderful time to explore. There are abundant reasons why Aspen stands out during this time of year, and we’ve put together some of our favorite things to do here in October.
Aspen in October
Enjoy the Fall Foliage
It’s no secret that Aspen offers some of the best leaf peeping in all of Colorado. Mid-September to mid-October tends to be the best time to view the leaves, depending on weather, elevation, forest health, and summer rainfall.
Take a drive up Independence Pass or go for a hike to the Maroon Bells to immerse yourself in the captivating natural beauty. The crisp autumn air and stunning alpine scenery make for an unforgettable experience this time of year. Learn more about the best time to see the leaves change in Aspen.
Go for a Hike
Fall is a great time to hike Aspen’s trails. Wander through golden aspen groves, maroon scrub oaks and dark green pine forests, and you’ll find yourself immersed in stunning scenery everywhere you look. Popular areas offer multiple trails for all levels and experiences. Explore our favorite fall hikes in Aspen.
Mountain Bike in Aspen Snowmass
Arguably everyone’s favorite outdoor activity during the fall, mountain biking in October is a dream. The Elk Camp gondola in Snowmass is closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t access the 50 miles of trails in and around Snowmass. The Tom Blake and Government Trails tend to peak in October. The diverse terrain helps to ensure that there is something for every rider to try.
Fly Fish on the Roaring Fork River
Aspen’s cool fall weather makes for a peaceful day on the water. Anglers love the Roaring Fork River’s crystal clear waters and abundance of trout. Catch your limit while enjoying the stunning fall scenery surrounding you.
Celebrate Halloween
There’s nothing like celebrating Halloween with the most spooktacular events in the Aspen area. Aspen’s “Trunk or Treat” celebration invites spectators to trick or treat from 3-4:30 pm at the Aspen Rec Center, vote for the best-decorated trunk, and enjoy some local BBQ! This is a great family event for the local community.
Dog lovers can bring their pup in costume to the Limelight Aspen for complimentary photos and treats and plenty of drink specials. On Halloween, head over to the W Aspen’s Halloween Party with food, cocktails, and a live DJ, or bring the family to Anderson Ranch for crafts, a costume contest, apple cider, and Halloween treats. Or, just wander the streets of Aspen after dark for costume viewing – this is Aspen’s favorite holiday!
