This is a good news/bad news kind of announcement: the good news is that it has been snowing steadily on Independence Pass this week and there is heavy wind-blown snow covering the road at the summit. The bad news is that Independence Pass is now closed for the season. The attached image shows clouds boiling in the direction of the Pass a few days ago. An article in today's Aspen Times outlines CDOT's reasoning behind the decision to close the road. The closure removes the option of arriving in Aspen from the east until around Memorial Day, so all visitors driving up to Aspen will need to come west on I-70 to Glenwood Springs and then take Highway 82 the rest of the way to our fair city .
