One of the most popular outdoor winter activities in our area is known as "uphilling" - walking or skinning up the mountain and skiing down. And although plenty of people uphill at Aspen Mountain and Snowmass, arguably the most popular mountain for the sport is Buttermilk. This weekend, the first-ever Aspen Ascent will take place at Buttermilk between the hours of 9am - 4pm on Saturday, and 9am - 1pm on Sunday. This is a free event put on by the City of Aspen and the Aspen Skiing Company, to celebrate the popularity of the sport. Adding to the fun will be equipment demos of lightweight skis, skins, snowshoes and ice-traction devices like Yaktraks, mountaineering experts from Aspen Expeditions and clinics on uphilling techniques. Although Buttermilk is officially closed, and the lift won't be running, the Skiing Company will open the restaurants and groom the slopes for the weekend.
