Each winter, Aspen turns into a snowy wonderland, attracting adventurers and winter weather sports enthusiasts alike. While its beauty captivates year-round, the snowy months of winter are when Aspen truly transforms into an alpine paradise.

For nearly half the year, the Aspen is covered with at least an inch of snow on the ground, with accumulations of twenty or more inches throughout most of January through March. From early season flurries to late spring snow showers, Aspen offers something special every month of the winter season. Here’s a closer look at how the snowfall can shape your experience throughout the year.

October: A Hint of Winter’s Arrival

October usually receives the first dusting of snow on the peaks as the leaves begin to change and temps start to drop. Light flurries typically start towards the end of the month around Halloween, with the average accumulation ranging from 1 to 6 inches.

If you plan a visit in October, you are sure to enjoy crisp fall air and the surrounding mountainsides ablaze with changing leaves, which descend from the peaks down into town. October also offers a quieter time to visit before the start of the holidays and ski season.

November: Winter Is Here

November remains a quieter time in Aspen, with fewer visitors in town and increasingly chilly temperatures throughout the month. Ski season kicks off at the end of the November, usually Thanksgiving weekend, ushering in the long-anticipated promise of a return to skiing.

Snowfall in November typically starts off light, with a monthly average of 10-15 inches. While the snow isn’t always consistent this early in the season, when it starts to fall, it helps to set the stage for opening day on the slopes.

December: A Winter Wonderland

Once December arrives, the snowfall becomes more regular, averaging roughly 30-50 inches by the month’s end. Just in time for the holidays, the streets and mountain peaks are often blanketed in snow, creating a charming snow globe-like atmosphere.

December is when Aspen hits its stride. From wintry strolls downtown to festive events and holiday skiing and snowboarding, December is the perfect time for a holiday visit.

January: Peak Powder

January marks the height of winter in Aspen with monthly snowfall averaging between 40-60 inches. The cold weather during January helps to keep the streets and slopes fresh and powdery, with skiers and snowboarders reveling in the optimal conditions.

Ski and snowboard season settles into its groove around this time, and the town is abuzz with post-holiday cheer and plenty of opportunities to hit the slopes. There is a wide variety of activities to do off the mountain as well, with a busier downtown atmosphere and fun, family-friendly events.

February: More Powder Days

Much like January, February snowfall averages between 40-60 inches. The mountains are in their prime and the snow is abundant, making it a haven for skiers and snowboarders. February’s wintry weather also makes it a perfect time for snowshoeing, a cozy sleigh ride, or even some cross-country skiing if you are looking for a less vertical workout.

March: A New Season Begins

While March brings the promise of spring, it is historically Aspen’s snowiest month. Because of gradually warming temperatures, March snowfall can average up to 70 inches for the month, meaning spring may be around the corner, but the snow is still plentiful.

The transition from winter to spring also means the beginning of spring skiing, which powder hounds know is an annual treat. Bluebird skies, sunny days, and warmer temps combine for a fun time playing on the slopes. And, there are plenty of chances to enjoy the spring weather outdoors (après anyone?) as the days grow longer and lifts run later into the afternoon on all four mountains.

April: A Winter’s Farewell

In April, the snow starts to wind down with Aspen typically receiving 20-30 inches for the month. While the average is less than peak winter months, the warmer spring weather makes for an enjoyable time outdoors and on the slopes.

May-September: A Snowy Intermission

Late spring and summer offer a break from the snowfall when Aspen transforms into a beautiful mountain haven with the warmer weather. While snowfall is still possible in the higher elevations, the highest mountain areas typically won’t see a dusting until late summer as the seasons transition into fall.
