Playing tennis in Aspen is a popular year-round activity, since the Roaring Fork Valley offers an abundance of both indoor and outdoor courts. When you’re in Aspen, you can play tennis on some of the most beautiful tennis courts in the country.
PUBLICLY-AVAILABLE TENNIS COURTS IN ASPEN
Aspen Golf and Tennis Club
The Aspen Tennis Club has six tennis courts open to the public. Should you or family members desire some pro tips, there are daily tennis clinics for players of all ages. Courts can be rented by the hour, or you may purchase punch cards for the clinics, a monthly or a summer membership. If you buy the All-Access Tennis Pass, you will receive direct access to the online Court Reservation system. As of this summer 2020, reservations are required for court time and classes and no drop-ins are allowed. Call the club at (970) 429-2869 with questions or to make a reservation.
The Aspen Recreation Center (The ARC)
With the purchase of a day pass at the ARC ($25 for adults and $23 for youth), you can access the tennis court at the Aspen Recreation Center (first come, first serve). The ARC is located on Maroon Creek Road. Take the roundabout outside of Aspen and exit onto Maroon Creek Rd.
The Snowmass Club
Located just 12 miles from Aspen, the Snowmass Club boasts 11 outdoor tennis courts surrounded by glorious mountain peaks, plus two indoor Har-Tru clay courts. If you’re not a Snowmass Club member, you can still call ahead to reserve a tennis court on the day you wish to play. For convenience, the Snowmass Club offers private and group lessons along with all the rental equipment you could possibly need (rackets, shoes and ball machines).
Basalt Middle School
There are two public outdoor tennis courts at Basalt Middle School, about 20 minutes down-valley from Aspen in the town of Basalt. Take Highway 82 and exit at the Two Rivers Rd light. The Middle School is on your right behind the Elementary School.
Crown Mountain Park
You’ll also find four tennis courts at Crown Mountain Park, a 124-acre open space down-valley from Aspen, just past the Willits shopping area and the El Jebel City Market. Tennis courts are first-come, first-serve — but if you find yourself waiting, you can always take a walk along the paved or wooded trails, ride your mountain bike on the pump track, take advantage the new park features, or just enjoy the view of majestic Mount Sopris.
PRIVATE ASPEN TENNIS COURTS AND CLUBS
Smuggler Racquet Club
Aspen’s Smuggler Racquet Club was humbly founded in 1973 by four tennis-starved skiing buddies. The six tennis courts at the Club are only available to members; however, guests and the public are invited to numerous on-court and social events. Family, single, summer, and social memberships are available; call the Membership Director at (970) 379-4452 for more information.
Aspen Meadows
The Aspen Meadows Resort has five available tennis courts on the Meadows campus in Aspen’s West End neighborhood. If you’re not an Aspen Meadows guest, you can still sign up for adult and youth tennis lessons and enjoy the four cushioned hard courts and single Har-Tru clay court when available.
Maroon Creek Club
While solely a private club, an active tennis membership at the Maroon Creek Club (near Buttermilk Mountain) means access to nine outdoor HarTru courts and four indoor HarTru courts year-round.
Roaring Fork Club
The two Har-Tru tennis courts at Basalt’s Roaring Fork Club are only available to members — four membership levels are available (Regular, National, Social, and Young Professional). If you do choose to purchase a membership, you’ll have access to weekly clinics and lessons for all levels and abilities. Private and semi-private tennis lessons are also available throughout the season. Call the Clubhouse at (970) 927-9000 for more information.
Aspen Glen
Located downvalley from Aspen in Carbondale, Aspen Glen has three clay tennis courts (open from mid-May through October) and one hard tennis court (available year-round as weather and snow conditions permit). Aspen Glen members’ clinics, open play, mixed doubles, and specialty events begin in mid-May and continue through September. Call 970-704-1905 for membership or updated safety information.
